Architect

De får meget god kritikk for sin seneste plate, THE ANALYSIS OF NOISE TRADING.

mer info:
architect is a hybrid of minimalistic drum'n bass and smooth ambient soundscapes explored by the electronic mastermind daniel meyer.

like a architect who built up his constructions in different layers and channels, also daniel is working with this method by using only sampling tools. he's constructing abstract sonic buildings which seems to be peculiar transparent - like concrete frames without any surfaces in a pleasant familiarity. the cold polyrhythmic drumcodes are bet into a melted ambience of safety and grace. it's the warm timbre of this ambient drum'n bass recording which creates it's own unique sonic profile.

each track on this album was recorded separately in very concentrated periods of creativity and collected since the last 3 years. architect's galactic supermarket is surly a perfect soundtrack for observing the space during the night...

daniel meyer's musical activities begun about 7 years ago with the electro-industrial project haujobb. since the last years daniel became addicted to drum 'n bass, which opened him new views of sonic expressions. this unavoidable important influence allowed him to extend his perception of electronic music to create new dimensions.

daniel started several new projects to present his different faces. together with dejan samardcic he's very active with the project dot's and dashes (on funktion & form, rtd) and haujobb. the project cleen is a collaboration with thorsten meier, n.e.w.t (on flatline records) is created with andreas meyer (forma tadre) and the other projects architect, mayr, s'apex are soloprojects of daniel. although there is always a unique common point of all his projects, each of them explores it's own imaginary universe in it's strongest way.

groove, oktober/november 1998

interface # 14

daniel myer, known to die-hard fans of the darker side of underground electronic dance music as the force behind haujobb, cleen, n.e.w.t., among others, offers this solo project through hymen, the new sublabel of the germany label ant-zen. while ant-zen is known mostly for their harsh tech-noise releases, this release heads even further into the territory that recent work from meyer has gone, much to the dismay of industrial purists. but for fans of progressive music, meyer is a godsend to the genre. by infusing it with intelligent and futuristic rhythms and minimal song structures, meyer has shown these purists that you can still make brilliant, dark electronic music without relying on formula. with sparce breakbeats and spacious melodies, galactic supermarket avoids cliches from both the post-industrial and techno genres from which meyer draws from more sucessfully that most releases of late. once again, a brilliant showing from a sorely underrated musician.

zillo, 11/98

architect. galactic supermarket. cd
having been a fan of haujobb for the past 4.5 years has allowed me to see a truly talented 'industrial' band progress fluidly into an even more phenomenal ambient - experimental dance outfit. so when i had heard that one of its members was releasing some experimental drum'n'bass under the guise of architect, i was quick to get my copy, once it finally became available in the states. the album starts off with a very short tune which sounds like the more recent haujobb material, driven by percussion that would make any serious autechre fan happy. the next track begins much along the same vein, which initially led me to wonder when the supposed drum'n'bass would kick in. not that i didn't enjoy what i was hearing, mind you, i was just expecting something different. but after 2 minutes into the track, my fears disappeared. daniel meyer's expert rhythmic programming floored me. his programming on everything from industrial to four-on-the-floor techno has always been excellent, but his off-beats were even more drool-worthy than i could have anticipated. forget photek. forget luke vibert (under any name he's currently recording under.) architect found a form of d'n'b, in my opinion, as yet untapped. instrumentally mixing in a form of degenerated minimalism with some of the most complex, yet easy to follow beats, with a great touch of soundtrack quality, i had found a cd that would get heavy rotation until copy, cut, cycle (the long awaited new haujobb full-lengther) gets released. while most of the tracks are definitely not too dance-floor friendly, even for the most hard-core of d'n'b clubbers, there are a few rump-shakers, especially tracks 9 and 10, at least once you get past their lengthy (yet cool) introductions - a well loved tradition according to most haujobb fans. but it is the 'chill-out' listener who will gain the greatest benefits from this hard-to-find gem. this cd is great for popping in the computer when you're about to get some serious work done, or just for background noise, when you feel like having something to cover the silence, other than the telly. the new empire
architect. galactic supermarket. cd
Now that drum and bass is something of a devalued currency - over-hyped and mass-produced, its best and brightest have gone the sad way and released strings of disappointments - i'm a lot more skeptical and critical of my purchases of this genre. That said, i've found the excitement I had when i first heard reats from dom & (x) and photek with the new full-length offering from architect, 'galactic supermarket'. The great coup is that this cd, and the 12" by hymen records labelmate beefcake, have been released on a small subsidiary of ant-zen records, which is known more for industrial noise freakouts and limited releases of gas-masks, concrete blocks, and rubbers that accompany their usually fine products. 'galactic supermarket' is spare and austere-looking in a vaguely retro-futuristic way - the heavy transparent plastic sleeve, the dull sparkly cd that looks very, very much like ae's 'chiastic slide' disc. the music matches it perfectly, and while similar to daniel myer's past influence, the redoubtable photek, surpasses even that now-foundering titan. like other successful 'drum and bass' full-lengths ('permutations', by amon tobin, for example), there are elements from other genres present. rchitect can fuse the dark, sinister ambience of many ant-zen bands (but not at all as noisy) and the atonal stutterings of idm a la funkstoerung at their best (actually, better) with the clean drums of ambient drum and bass to thrilling effect. unlike unsuccessful attempts at creating a full-length, such as photek's 'modus operandi', the experience never grows repetitive or stale - the same sounds aren't used ad infinitum, the beats are constantly evolving (a lesson dom and roland and panacea should have picked up, that they might have saved their otherwise excellent cd's), and none of these tracks have been released before on popular and better pressings - see 'modus operandi'. Tthe disc is inspirational in its attention to detail, which rivals that of autechre - a lot of work went into the creation of this cd, and it shows. It is, by far, the strongest of the haujobb side-projects, with the possible exception of dots and dashes (since i haven't heard it). If you liked myer, you'll be blown away by this project - the child truly is the father to the man in this case - architect is so much denser, more complex, and outright virtuosic despite its low-key vibe that the 'style' 12" sounds like a hackneyed cover act. as an added bonus, you'll even hear samples of the excellent beefcake on this album, a response, perhaps, to the haujobb samples used on 'spontaneous human combustion'. 'ahead', the track with the obvious beefcake sample, is one of the five best drum and bass tracks i have heard, right up there with 'ni ten ichi ryu'. the hype proves true, and the doubters are silenced - daniel myer, despite the protests from his core following and the criminal lack of coverage from any of the established techno scene, has revitalized drum and bass, and perhaps redefined it in its darker hours. this album rates a whole-hearted double-plus-fuckin'-good. too bad no one will hear it, as haujobb is ignored, along with hymen, of course, in favor of 4 hero, roni size, goldie, and all of the other acts that spin and rolling stone claim are the vanguard of the electronic sounds of the underground. re:mote induction

"cooly floating electronic structures construct around the demand of detail. those details - dreamed voices, slow glacier melodies - embrace my attention" those are the words i used to describe architect the first time i heard their music. that track, pastgate, is included on the first architect cd galactic supermarket and remains an outstanding track. here it is preceded by the intro of short memo - preparing the most basic pathways required for pastgate. following that pathway leads to the title tracks of galactic supermarket. featuring a sound that reminds of download's stanley pain - drawn, sighed voice elements and the movement of drum patterns. in its total it is more drifting, but the impression is strong. by contrast, once it starts random lfo reminds of daniel myer's parent project haujobb, perhaps freeze frame reality period. this stems from the sharply electronic beats and twitching melody. ahead is in the same league as pastgate, though more forceful beats move across the wavering hesitations of melody. derived from the origins of drum 'n' bass, layered percussion pins us down against the soft bass melody. preparing the way for the mystery of the vocal samples that emerge. more subtle eat raw initially consists of bleep edged clicks and low drones. the mood and feel of eat raw is different from the rest of the album concerning itself more whit spatial construction. another nice piece with a core of precise high-hat taps electronic moods again has something of a haujobb/download influence. the pace is up on many of the slower based pieces and the change rate is considerably higher. if previous tracks were too regular for you then this track is more likely to please with its variety of sound. rubbertrack and parallel show more of a techno influence. the former acid beat input through the architect sound. the latter erupting into rapid break beats after a long and slow intro. this feel continues into tot mann - a less pronounced intro giving ground to a steady drumtrack. with mechanism we return to the absolute highs of pastgate and ahead , with more of the tech-beat influence of parallel and tot mann. highly sprung rapid beats, drifting melodies and suggested voices. for me this is definitely the kind of track that architect do best. daniel myer has a number of projects, which as well as the already mentioned haujobb includes cleen and newt. as part of the duo haujobb his work has taken on a celebrated status. architect appears to be one of his most recent projects with galactic supermarket and the accompanying vinyl release galactic edge being their first release. at about the same time the only other band to have a cd release on the mainly vinyl label hymen was beefcake (though by the time this review has actually gone online there have been a couple of others added). between architect and beefcake we can see some stylistic similarities as though between them they are helping to shape the label's sound, at least in terms of their cd releases.

ultime atome

this is the newest entry in the overwhelming barrage of haujobb side projects. it's much more newt than cleen (or haujobb for that matter). in other words, it is essentially very minimalistic intelligent techno. the cd packaging itself is eyecatching, with green transparent plastic inserts rather than your standard paper inserts. definitely one of better design jobs i've seen. as for the music, daniel meier has come through with yet another technically excellent album. the question is, though, will *you* like it? haujobb has been steadily losing industrial fans as each album moved further and further out of the genre into intelligent techno; this side project is no exception. if you have been happy with this progression, and more importantly, liked newt, then this cd is definitely worthwhile, if not essential. if this change has sickened you and you are still patiently waiting for the triumphiant return of haujobb into the industrial scene, i suggest you avoid this one, especially at the current import prices. personally, i love this album - tho i do miss the old, more 'industrial' haujobb too. in a better world, we would have both. style: idm and jungle. notes: haujobb sideproject. review by krist

"galactic supermarket" released on hymen features the songs recorded over the period of three years by d.myer. it is an album that grows on you over time. do not just listen to it once or twice. this disc will create a completely unique and new atmosphere for you filled with chilling sequences, delicate beats, constantly changing melodies, occasional rough breaks and beats. this is not a soundtrack music - it is too intelligent for that demanding your complete attention. drum'n'bass rhythms go through every track, sometimes disappearing completely, sometimes becoming rather fast and harsh; the melody cracks, breaks, and finally vanishes only to appear again filled with wierd snoring or clicks; sweet sequences flow like waves: they come and go, creating changing swaying atmosphere. half of the tracks on the album are relatively aggressive with steady drum'n'bass beats, creacking, breaking sounds, interesting samples. my favorites are "pastgate", "mechanism" (constant changing beats, nice occasional bass lines), "ahead" (relatively complex with recognizable beats that stay throught the whole song), "parallel", "tot mann" (harsh, raw drum'n'bass and flowing sequences on the background, nothing else; very minimal and delicate). analog bleeps, drones, pulsating waves, vanishing sounds. very very minimalistic. the silence and empty spaces are an organic part of the music. they make the listener create the structures that are merely suggested by the music. this is why this album is truly intelligent forcing you to think and create images of your own. it never becomes boring or uninteresting. there always is another beat or unexpected turn too keep you on your toes. you can almost catch something reminding you of newt or forma tadre in several tracks. take your time, listen to it.
