Japaneren Masami Akita (f. 1956\, Japan) startet sitt Merzbow-prosjekt i 1979. Inspirert av Kurt Schwitters\, Wieneraksjonisme\, dada\, psychedelia og prog-rock bestemte Akita seg for å skape et nytt sonisk uttrykk som forkastet alle musikalske normer. Målet var å kombinere Schwitters idéer om søppel som materiale\, med rockens mest ekstatiske høyder. Resultatet ble den moderne støymusikken\, hvor Merzbow i dag er den desidert største og mest anerkjente artisten – støykongen fra Japan.
Akita er også den mest aktive\, med over 300 utgivelser bak seg (inkludert Merzbox\; en 50CD-boks) og viser ingen tegn på å slakke ned.
